A disappointing year in 1999 after becoming fit during the pre-season, then injuring a knee and struggling to do enough work to maintain his fitness. Had surgery after round 17 to correct patella tendinitis in his right knee (he had degenerative tissue around the kneecap) electing to come back with a good preparation for 2000. Showed good form against Sydney in round 10 and was brilliant against Geelong in round 15. Should benefit under Malthouse, who likes to emphasise the role of the key forward, and still managed to lead Collingwood's goalkicking despite playing only 12 games.
